Eileen Hickey-Hulme |
|
Armed with nail polish, lipstick, eye shadow and various other unconventional media, artist Eileen Hickey-Hulme creates her pearlescent, abstract images often juxtaposing images of power with those of fragility. The icons found in her work -- the rose, nude figure, fabric, rugs, and ceramics -- are used to challenge the traditional way of thinking about the masculine and feminine models. Her work is influenced by Modernist, Feminist, and Surreal themes and she boldly marries feminist imagery with contemporary concerns. Her latest pieces are an on-going exploration of process reclaiming devalued symbols as potent and universal ones. Eileen was on the Editorial Board of "Heresies, A Feminist Art Journal", "The Great Goddess Issue", with Carolee Schneeman, Mary Beth Edelson, Michelle Stuart and other leading artists of the 1970s. She studied with Leo Steinberg and was Curatorial Intern for Daine Waldman at the Guggenheim Museum as well as a Classifier and Cataloguer at the Frick Art Reference Library. |
